TWO DAY WORKSHOP

Instructor: Kate Warren

Intro to Portraiture: Making Evocative Portraits in Studio & On Location is an immersive two-day workshop for photographers ready to move beyond “good lighting” into portraits that mean something. Blending history, technique, and emotional intelligence, this course treats portraiture as both a craft and a relational act—one shaped by power, care, collaboration, and choice. Through lectures, discussion, and hands-on shooting, we’ll ask not just how to make portraits, but why — and what’s at stake when we do.

Participants will work through three lighting scenarios — natural light, studio strobe, and blended available/artificial light — while learning how light carries emotion, how to read and shape it, and how to work ethically and confidently with subjects. Equal emphasis is placed on technical fluency and the social dynamics of the portrait space: consent, communication, coaching, and collaboration. Expect thoughtful context, practical tools, and plenty of time shooting in a small, supportive group.

This workshop is ideal for photographers who want their portraits to feel intentional, resonant, and alive—whether working in the studio or on location.

Lighting is at the core of every great photograph. In this workshop, you’ll learn how light behaves, how to recognize it, and how to shape and control it intentionally. Rather than teaching one specific lighting style, this class breaks down the foundational principles that apply to all forms of photographic lighting.

Through clear explanations and guided studio demonstrations, students will explore the science behind light and learn how to translate that knowledge into their own work. Topics include light direction and diffusion, hard versus soft light, fill and negative fill, and an overview of different types of studio lighting tools.

This workshop is ideal for beginners, self-taught photographers, or anyone who wants a deeper, more intuitive understanding of lighting that will grow with their practice—no matter what or how they shoot.
